It was so good, that we had the best Mother’s Day sale in four years! Everyone was in tune, trained, informed and self assured. And here’s the best part: I wasn’t even there! I was in Vancouver!

I realized that I was the system!

There are SO many things I didn't know. And the worse part is that I thought I did!

The business was thriving because we worked really hard at being the best and giving the customer "a little bit more." That worked fine when there was only one store because I chose to be there 12 hours a day, seven days a week. I was the system!

But when I opened a production center and two more stores and an administrative office...that was a different story! Last year we experienced 300% growth but this year the economy has really taken its toll. To build and equip our new locations, I got a loan in U.S. dollars, and with the devaluation of the peso, I am paying for this with sweat and blood! I’ve never been a very good cash manager and because we had only one location before, and had no real competition, I realize now that I was kind of careless with money. The whole situation with the H1N1 flu outbreak has been like a crash course reminder to straighten up!

I realize now that I’d opened two new locations without having any systems in place!. To say it was difficult is a gross understatement! But Mastery Impact! has prepared me for growth and freedom. I'm not there yet, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel… and it’s not too far. In fact, at the end of this year, I plan to sell the first Kukis Franchise (I have a few people already waiting to get involved!). I was recently in Vancouver (the city I have always wanted to return to) and I have decided to be there by 2011... while Kukis continues to grow and thrive in Mexico!

Because of E-Myth now I know how to delegate, communicate with staff, plan, get to know and understand my customer and budget. There are a lot of people who will tell you what to do... Only E-Myth tells you how to do it, the system is brilliant.

But if you ask me to name the most important thing the Mastery Impact! program has done for me, it has to be this: it helped me get rid of my ego! You know, the idea that I sell what I want, how I want it... Instead it showed me the wonderful side to catering to other people's wants and wishes!

You can not always choose the circumstances, but you do have the freedom to choose your attitude and how you react to those circumstances.

How I Found E-Myth

When my husband and I travel, we spend a lot of time in bookstores. I'm always in the self help or the business/marketing section. In September 2006, we were in Chicago and I found The E- Myth Revisited on a table marked the "best" business books... What caught my attention was the headline: "Why Most Small Businesses Fail.” Kukis By Maru was 12 years old at the time, and successful, but I wanted to learn how to really make it failure proof!

I’ve read The E-Myth Revisited at least 12 times, and I’ve given it away as gifts…people just love it! But I feel that the book tells you what, and I wanted to know how. That’s why I enrolled in the Mastery Impact! coaching program.

When Life Hands You Lemons... Make Cookies!

The 2009 H1N1 flu outbreak itself didn’t really cause problems for us; it was more like the cherry on top of it all. On top of an already shaky economy, it hit everyone pretty hard. The whole country (except for supermarkets) was closed for three days in May — days that Mexicans typically travel and party. We have locations in the three malls that people visit when they come to Merida (while locals run for the beach) and Kukis has become a "must visit" if you are in town. That weekend we lost tens of thousands of much needed pesos!

Here is the thing: at the end of the day, the H1N1 outbreak actually helped me and my business! How? It gave me a unique opportunity to gather everyone on my staff for three full days. That turned out to be fantastic! You can not always choose the circumstances, but you do have the freedom to choose your attitude and how you react to those circumstances.

Since January, we’ve held bi-weekly meetings with our staff (30% of whom are students). We’d just started developing systems after a wonderful "Key Frustration Process" meeting, but we couldn't go as fast as we wanted through the process. This three-day “break” gave us time to revise, talk, and ask the important questions. We did things like practice "the perfect ribbon making" technique and we left with a wonderful, positive feeling from everyone. I’ve challenged them to help KuKis become the oasis of optimism and good cheer that is so needed these days!

My E-Myth coach has always urged me to get everyone involved, but I would never have closed my stores in order to have a three-day seminar! This situation gave me the unique opportunity to communicate with my staff as a group... to talk about why and how things were changing to the E-Myth way.
