THE 2007 "E-MYTH WORLDWIDE ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR"

AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Award Honoring Community College-educated Entrepreneurs will be presented at the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship’s Annual Conference

Santa Rosa, CA – January 3, 2007 – Lois and Dave Anderson, owners of the Bay and Bay Transfer Company of Rosemount, MN, have been named the winners of the 2007 E-Myth Worldwide Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The Award recognizes the achievements of entrepreneurs and the community colleges that they attended.

E-Myth Worldwide, a leading business development education provider for small business owners, established the award through the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), which invited students, faculty, administrators and others to make nominations. To be eligible for the award, entrepreneurs must have attended a community college, been in business for three years, and achieved annual gross revenues of $500,000. Nominators were asked to describe why the entrepreneur deserves this award, and how the community college they attended assisted them in becoming a successful entrepreneur.

The Andersons got their start when the diesel repair shop for which Dave worked went out of business. Instead of going back into the world of traditional employment, Dave went home and announced to Lois that they were going into business for themselves. Today, Bay and Bay’s transportation business is booming, with 200 employees and 147 contract drivers. Sales have grown approximately 25% per year and are nearing $50 million annually.

"We firmly believe that small businesses are the driving force of innovation and growth in the American economy, and we’re pleased to recognize the role that community colleges make at the local level every day in preparing entrepreneurs for the challenges they face," says Bill Schlegel, CEO of E-Myth Worldwide. "And, of course, we’re especially pleased to recognize Lois and Dave for the impressive achievements they’ve made in growing their business, and in being role models to other entrepreneurs. Congratulations!"

"Lois and Dave were selected for this award because they give their time and wisdom to help other entrepreneurs achieve success," says Heather Van Sickle, executive director of NACCE. "In 2004, when their alma mater, the Dakota Technical Community College (DCTC), launched its Business and Entrepreneurship Institute, Lois and Dave both volunteered to be a part of the advisory board. Despite their busy schedules, they have offered their input and expertise to help shape the college’s programming and support services for entrepreneurs. Lois has also served as a graduation speaker, and Dave has helped the college reach new funding partners in the community."

The Andersons will enjoy an all expenses paid trip to the Fourth Annual NACCE Conference, Entrepreneurial Leadership: Revolutionizing Community Colleges, in Orlando, FL from January 8-11, 2007. They will be present for the award ceremony to be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, and $2,000 will be given to their community college alma mater, DCTC, to support entrepreneurship.

E-Myth Worldwide Wins Recognition as one of the Best Places to Work in the North Bay

Santa Rosa, CA - September 18, 2006 - E-Myth Worldwide has been acknowledged as one of the winners in the inaugural "Best Places to Work in the North Bay" survey conducted by the North Bay Business Journal.

According to the North Bay Business Journal, "The winners send a clear message about the balance between doing good work and having fun while you are doing it. And the key element to creating that balance is people, yes, but very importantly, management."

When asked to express in their own words why their company was a great place to work, many survey respondents emphasized the importance of good management, which was described as consisting of mutual respect, fairness, and open communication.

E-Myth survey respondents in particular noted the contributions of their new management team in making the company one of the Best Places to Work in the North Bay. In fact, E-Myth employees stressed their pride at working for a company with strong workplace equality, a sense of camaraderie, and good morale, thanks in large part to a strategic company overhaul initiated by the CEO, William Schlegel.

Schlegel notes, "When I came on board in 2004, I knew I wanted to instill a culture of teamwork and responsibility. To do that, I hired a new executive team, restructured employee compensation, and established regular employee meetings. In addition, quarterly entrepreneurship awards are now presented to employees who demonstrate talent and creativity, and we hold informal events where management and staff can socialize together and have fun."

Beyond that, Schlegel brought an expanded strategy that encourages employee innovation. The result is that the company has created a whole new suite of online products and services, with the goal of reaching out to potential clients worldwide and increasing profitability. Employees receive bonuses for their contributions in creating these inventive new offerings, and the company as a whole has been energized by the new strategy.

The result has been a palpable uplift in company spirit. In fact, E-Myth had one of the most enthusiastic employee survey response rates, hitting upwards of 90 percent. Explains Schlegel, "Every worker is encouraged to be a marketer and spokesperson both inside and outside of the business, and they're recognized and rewarded for that."

In just over two years, Schlegel and his team, with the full support of the company's Board of Directors, have not only turned E-Myth into a tightly knit, loyal group of employees with a strong sense of purpose and pride - but also into a more profitable enterprise. "The proof is there in black and white," says Schlegel. "Happier employees make for more productive employees."

About the survey

Nominations for Best Places to Work in the North Bay were opened in spring 2006. Nominated companies were then contacted by North Bay Business Journal staff and invited to submit a company application, followed by a mandatory online employee survey that drew 3,400 responses from across the region. The survey was set up through Zoomerang, a widely popular online polling tool. All responses were anonymous.

Ninety companies were nominated in three categories (based on number of employees), and 24 winners were chosen. These 24 companies were selected after being analyzed by the editorial staff of the Business Journal on the basis of several criteria, including the employee questionnaire, the survey ratings by employees, the number of responses, the size of the company, the breakdown of responses by management and non-management, as well as written comments. E-Myth was a winner in the category of companies with 25-100 employees.

THIS LABOR DAY, SIX MILLION AMERICANS ARE PLANNING AN EXODUS FROM CORPORATE LIFE

Six million Americans who work for an employer say they plan to strike out on their own and start a new business or company in the next 12 months, according to a new opinion poll. A total of 13.6 million employed, unemployed, or self-employed adults 18 years of age and older, who represent 7.8% of the U.S. population, hope to take control of their financial futures by starting a new business within the next year.

These findings are part of a national opinion poll sponsored by E-Myth Worldwide, a global provider of online business development education, advice, and coaching for entrepreneurs. The nationally representative poll was conducted August 4-6 by Synovate, a leading independent research company.

William Schlegel, CEO of E-Myth Worldwide, says, "The survey shows that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in America - driven in most cases by the desire to make more money. This Labor Day, millions of people want to stop laboring for others, or get out of the unemployment line, and start working for themselves by becoming their own boss. For those who are already self-employed, many plan to begin new enterprises. And while the statistics show that more men than women hope to start their own business, 45% of currently unemployed women see starting their own business as a way to achieving financial independence."

According to the survey, people said the biggest challenges they face in starting a business are lack of knowledge and confidence (44%), raising money (44%), and the economic and competitive climates (39%). Schlegel notes that, "Some factors influencing the likelihood of success, such as the state of the economy, are beyond an individual's control. However the good news is that the knowledge entrepreneurs need to be successful can be quickly gained by learning the critical thinking and core business development skills essential to the success of small businesses. From our experience of looking at the challenges facing small business owners, we can actually see the direct correlation that increased knowledge builds confidence and greater confidence enhances the chances for sustainable success."

Other major findings of the poll include the following:

  • 8.5 million men and 5.1 million women are thinking about starting their own business next year.
  • The most popular reason to start a business is to make more money (30%), be their own boss (18%) and fulfill a dream or hobby (15%).
  • The desire to start a new business spans all age groups and income levels, but is significantly higher for those people ages 45-54, who are getting serious about their retirement plans.
  • Individuals planning to start a new business are more likely to live in the South and West regions of the United States, and they are least likely to live in the Midwest.
  • By a margin of 50% to 34%, men are more confident of their potential business success than women.

About the Poll

  • The telephone poll of 1,000 adults 18 years of age and older was conducted August 4 - 6, 2006 by Synovate.
  • 7.8% of the U.S. population ages 18 and older are thinking about starting a business within the next 12 months (based on year 2000 U.S. Census Data of 174 million Americans aged 18 years old and above, which equates to approximately 13.6 million people).
