Our ah-ha moments have occurred frequently. For me, the exciting side of these events has not so much been in learning something startling new, but rather to suddenly realize how some concept that had long been vaguely in my thinking could be defined and used with powerful proprietary results.

The Mastery Impact! program has been so uniquely effective in helping us to focus on what is really important in our operation. It has helped us identify those specific activities which enable us to fulfill our promise to our customers, and to build systems around these activities to ensure that they occur as promised, only better, and with unfailing consistency.

Before Mastery Impact!, I felt frustrated and often inadequate in handling issues involving people management. I didn’t understand that we couldn’t manage people but that we needed to create the systems for people to run. Now that we are creating systems, the unpleasant people management problems have pretty much gone away, and I sense that others in the company share our new found sense of organization and standards. Our relationships with people both inside and outside the company seem to have become more relaxed and comfortable, while at the same time more productive.

Working with our coach gave us accountability

I have come to enjoy a sense of freedom and well being in knowing that “I am not the business,” and I am able to view the business from the perspective that it has been created not as a place for me to work, but as a system of systems designed by me, to work for me. Working with our coach can be summed in one word: Accountability. Does she know our business as well as we do? I doubt it. Does she know our industry as well as we do? I doubt that also, but does she know how to help us transform our business, and in turn the opportunity for us to lead more fulfilling lives? Absolutely! She has helped us do, in less than one year, what I have been “going to get around to doing for 30 years!”

My wish is to share with anyone who will listen, that if you want the joy and satisfaction you always sensed could be yours in owning your own business, make the investment in yourself and work with a coach and the E-Myth Mastery Impact! to build a business worth owning, which I am sure will add as immeasurably to your life as it has to mine.

I am able to view the business from the perspective that it has been created not as a place for me to work, but as a system of systems designed by me, to work for me.

I knew it would work, I just didn’t know how to get it done

When I read The E-Myth Revisited a number of years ago, I just knew that Michael Gerber was talking to me, and about my business. My experience told me that it all made sense. Someday, I thought, I will get to work doing what Michael told me to do.

But I did little with what I had learned, and all the things Michael said that I would experience in a business run by a “Manager” and “Technician” slowly and painfully came to pass. Paperwork and problems kept me very busy. People just didn’t seem to understand how things should be done in the business. I felt I was indispensable to the daily operation. If I wasn’t there, who would know what I know and be able to put out all the daily brush fires?

I knew that the E-Myth concept of systematization would work, but I just didn’t know how to do it, and if I did sometimes have an idea how, I just didn’t get it done. “I am the owner of the company after all, accountable to no one, and I will do it when I get the time,” was the fatal flaw in my thinking.

The instigator was family succession

A number of years ago my daughter, Heidi, started working in the business; first in administration, and then as an active real estate agent. As her competence and reputation in both areas grew, and she became willing to take on more and more responsibility in the operation of the business, it just seemed natural to think of succession.

These thoughts, while quite pleasing to contemplate, also brought with them the panicked thinking that seems to occur in the wee hours of the morning. “What am I thinking? She is my daughter! You can’t just turn this over and walk away.” That would be akin to giving her command of the Titanic and saying “Good Luck.” Systems? What systems? Financial statement that makes sense? How about client follow up systems, client fulfillment systems, Lead Generation systems (I didn’t know these terms then, but I sensed the need).

Starting with E-Myth

To “test the waters” with E-Myth Worldwide, I took the plunge and attended a two-day Leadership Intensive Seminar event last year. We were of course told about the Mastery Impact! coaching program while there. After discussing the idea of enrolling in the program with Heidi, her enthusiastic “Yes!” to the idea gave me the assurance that we were on the right course to building a business that would serve us by design, and not by default to the urgent needs of the day, hour and minute.

For me, one surprising aspect of our work in Mastery Impact!, and in our discussions with our coach, was how much we already know about our business and our personal strengths and values, but haven’t articulated or put to use as effectively as we could. We discovered how strong our convictions are about the human side of the business, the relationships we have with each other, with our agents, with office clients, and with our fellow Realtors and our community. We realized we needed to define these personal values to ensure that they would become an endurable part of our culture and our company brand.
