Dear
E-Myth Reader,
We at E-Myth know that business owners with a Strategic Objective and strategies to reach that objective can reap
remarkable benefits. What guidelines can business owners use to build strategies? We have a new article that
describes the assessment of your industry's profit potential and discusses military history as a source for rules of
strategy. Read and comment on Strategize Like a General.
Porter's Five Forces
Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter developed a framework to assess the profitability of a
marketplace by measuring the intensity of competitive pressures. These 5 forces affect a company's ability to make a
profit: the threat of substitute products, the threat of new competitors, competitive intensity, customer bargaining
power and supplier bargaining power. As the level of these pressures rises, the profit potential for that
marketplace goes down. This marketplace assessment is analogous to shared environmental effects on opposing armies.
Strategize Like a General
As business and battle concepts can parallel one another, so business people have applied certain strategies forged
in combat to their commercial enterprises. Some martial strategies can assist your positioning with respect to your
competitors. Here are some dual-purpose guidelines from Captain B.H. Liddell Hart:
- Stay within your means
- Keep your objective always in mind
- Choose the line of least expectation
- Exploit the line of least resistance
- Take a line of operation which offers an alternative objective
One can see how these tactical methods could be used in a variety of military and business strategies. See detail
in the article Strategize Like a
General.
