Dear E-Myth Reader,

Cardiac surgeons at a children's hospital in London learned lessons about safety and efficiency from Formula One race teams, then applied those lessons in new patient transfer procedures. See what they learned and post a comment at the article Operation Pit Stop.

Operation Pit Stop

Drs. Martin Elliot and Allan Goldman of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, England were familiar with the difficulties of transferring their young patients from operating room to intensive care unit. The 'handover' process is complicated, error-prone and demands close attention to many details.

They observed that their 'handover' was similar in complexity to pit stop tasks done by Formula One race teams, and so launched Operation Pit Stop to systematically improve their transfer protocols.

One doctor's quote; "...after we had been with the Ferrari team, we watched videos of ourselves at work and it was quite a shock to realize the lack of structure in what we were doing". See how the medical team applied race knowledge to their procedures at the blog article Operation Pit Stop.
