The Curse of the Experts
Published: 05/22/2008
Dear E-Myth Reader,
A growing business needs regular infusions of technical expertise. But an owner risks abdicating their
leadership role by hiring experts, and then giving them free rein to 'do their thing'. If things subsequently
go wrong, what ensues will be a nasty mess. Login to read the article The Curse of the Experts.
The Curse of the Experts
Give some thought to the words "experience required" before putting them into a job listing. Decide whether
you need someone with real expertise, or someone capable of carrying out well-documented tasks. A capable
employee with less experience will also be less expensive than a technical expert. Here's a checklist:
- Decide if an expert is really necessary
- Hire for competence and flexibility, not just experience
- Clearly communicate your goals and expectations for the business
The right approach is to develop expert systems and then hire skillful people to operate them. Read the full
