Ask a business owner why his or her customers choose to buy their particular product or service, and you might hear a variety of answers:

"I have no idea, but I'm lucky they do, and I hope they don't stop!"

"I guess it's because they like what I'm selling."

"Actually, people aren't buying from me, and I don't understand why not. I think I have a great product, and I use it myself all the time."

If those sound like your answers, perhaps you're wishing there was a system you could use that would help you to rely less on guessing and assuming, and more on producing predictable and sustainable sales and revenue results for your business.

To create a system like that, you need to know two things: (1) who is likely to buy, and (2) why they buy. This article focuses on the why - the marketing science of psychographics. If you can understand your customers' motivations - their psychographic profiles -- you can think strategically about how to appeal to those motivations through your product.

How is your business perceived by your target market? What unique attributes do customers and prospects associate with your business? Do you know?

In this article, we will focus on the intangible expectation element of a brand.

4th annual Stevie® Awards will be presented on June 12 in New York City

On Monday, May 15th, E-Myth Worldwide was named a Finalist in the Interactive Media category in The 2006 American Business Awards.

Hailed as "the business world's own Oscars" by the New York Post (April 27, 2005), The American Business Awards are the only national, all-encompassing business awards program honoring great performances in the workplace.

Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word "crowned," winners will be announced during the annual gala on Monday, June 12 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. More than 800 executives from across the U.S.A. are expected to attend. The ceremonies will be videocast on the Internet and broadcast on radio.

Among the Best of the Best

More than 1,500 entries from companies of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted for consideration in more than 40 categories, including Best Overall Company, Best Executive, Best New Product or Service, and Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program. E-Myth Worldwide will be competing in the Interactive Media: Professional Education category for the Embark E-Learning product, and in the Interactive Media: Public Information category for the Embark Community Connection.

"We are thrilled to have the quality and usability of our products and services validated by an organization as esteemed as the American Business Awards," says Susan Weber, VP of Product Management, Marketing, and Technology at E-Myth Worldwide. "We worked hard to ensure that we were able to meet the unique challenge of designing our Embark brand offerings to fulfill the needs of our diverse customers — who come from all over the world and across all industries, and who have widely varying levels of education and business expertise. I would like to thank and congratulate everybody on the E-Myth team for their dedication and commitment to making our products and services the highest quality possible. Well done!"

Members of the Awards' Board of Distinguished Judges & Advisors and their staffs will soon select Stevie Award winners from among the Finalists. Finalists were chosen by business professionals nationwide during preliminary judging in March through early May.

An Important Achievement

"Being named a Finalist in The American Business Awards is an important achievement," said Michael Gallagher, founder and president of The Stevie Awards. "It means that independent business executives have agreed that the nominee is worthy of national recognition. We congratulate all of the Finalists on their achievement and wish them well in the competition."

Details about The American Business Awards and the list of Finalists in all categories are available at www.stevieawards.com/aba.
