Got An Operations Manual?

Published: 11/01/2007

The E-Myth Insider

November 1st, 2007 Brought to you by E-Myth Worldwide

Dear E-Myth Reader,

We follow our recent newsletter on Action Plans with this synopsis of creating a company Operations Manual. Read the article Develop an Operations Manual at the E-Myth site. We also encourage you to watch the demo of Embark Live. This blend of online training and group coaching is a great way to improve your business acumen, and get a jump-start writing your own operations manual.

Got An Operations Manual?

An operations manual is the guidebook for how things are done in your business, and is an excellent tool to train staff on company policy, procedures and systems. An operations manual becomes a single-point reference for important company information. Content will vary from business to business, particularly with regard to systems, but the structure of operations manuals should be consistent:

Company Vision
Company History
Products & Services
Company Policies
Systems (Action Plans)
Position Statements

Note that in E-Myth vernacular a 'Position Statement' is a description with job tasks, expected results, schedules, responsibilities, reporting and dependencies detailed. Employees acknowledge their understanding of requirements and commit to achieving the results when signing their position statement.

Good Operations Manuals See Regular Use

The rewards of having accurate, current documentation of your business' systems are great, while poorly-written documents are likely never to be used. A good operations manual is *the* resource for employees seeking answers to process questions. Managers training new staff should use it as well to teach systems and to explain job requirements. See the article at Develop an Operations Manual .
