Dear E-Myth Reader,
This week's E-Myth Insider arrives between the anniversaries of Hurricane Katrina striking the American Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005 and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on New York City. Disasters aren't usually part of day-to-day business operations, but having solid plans (a system) in place will make you less vulnerable. This newsletter summarizes points in the E-Myth article Plan for Disasters Before They Strike. We encourage you to read the article and create your own disaster recovery plans. We also invite you to download the free disaster recovery kit from the Institute for Business and Home Safety. Visit E-Myth's Disaster Recovery page for the download link.
Planning for Disaster
Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf coast of the USA, and much of this area still suffers the effects. The storm damaged or destroyed 30 oil platforms and caused 9 oil refineries to close down. The Mississippi forestry industry was also dramatically affected, with estimated loss of $5 billion. Hundreds of thousands of residents were left unemployed, which continues to have ripple effects across the Gulf Coast economy. Total economic impact in Louisiana and Mississippi is estimated to exceed $150 billion.
What can a business owner do to prepare for such a disaster?
The magnitude of the Hurricane Katrina disaster is colossal, but there are measures a business owner can take beforehand to minimize potential loss of life and property, including
- Create a written plan for how to deal with people and property in an emergency.
- Purchase and store emergency supplies, including food, water, blankets and flashlights.
- Be ready to act quickly if a disaster is imminent.
During a disaster, stay calm; your employees will be less frightened if you are calm. Priorities are:
- people first
- data second
- everything else
You must be prepared to account for all people in your office, communicate effectively with all concerned and secure cash, valuables and other inventory.
